Dick DeVos has become one of the most charitable givers of this century, and he is leading the rest of his family down the same path to giving.
I really do commend him for this because he has been able to do so much good for so many organizations. I know that DeVos has dabbled in politics, but I believe, second to his reputation as a philanthropist, that he has shined the most as a businessman. He started a company under the umbrella of his father’s Amway company, and he has made millions over the years. His career also includes titles like CEO of the NBA’s Orlando Magic and memberships and founding chairs to multiple boards which you can see in detail on his LinkedIn profile. He has certainly made a name for himself in the business world, but even more so in the world of charity. I like the fact that he has felt the need to give back to others. There are a lot of people that may be wondering how his family is able to give so much, but my research has led me to an answer.
Both DeVos and his wife have had fathers that have left an inheritance. I think this made it easier, but it should still inspire people to give because the DeVos family didn’t have to give any money to any contributions. They could have simply spread the money with their family and continued to pass down the inheritance. Instead, the family the DeVos family has given tremendous amounts – over a billion – to various charities.
I think that the philanthropy that Dick has shown puts him right up there with billionaire givers like Bill Gates. The biggest may be that DeVos is not known by nearly as many people as Gates. Dick DeVos is known more so in the Michigan area because this is where he has spent his years as a business leader.
I had never heard of DeVos, but discovering his contributions have made me realize that there are philanthropists that come from all over the world. It really is great to see Dick put money into the Dick and Betsy Devos Family Foundation because it helps so many kids. He has also played a big part in the revitalization of the downtown area of the Grand Rapids because he loves the state of Michigan so much. I applaud Dick and his wife Betsy – along with their four children – for the money that they have given to these various charities and organizations that are in need.
