Betsy DeVos was named Secretary of Education by President Donald Trump, and her nomination was passed by the Senate very easily. First and foremost, Betsy DeVos is a philanthropist and an activist. She has been an activist for private schools and for several idea relating to school vouchers and school choice. She actively supports the idea of magnet schools. President Bush had appointed her to the board of directors of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Betsy DeVos is married to the former CEO of Amway, Mike DeVos. Her father is the founder of the Prince Corporation.
She was educated at a private Christian school, which might help us understand her favoring school vouchers and private schools. She earned a BA from Calvin College in Michigan.
Ms. DeVos has been active in the Republican party since 1982, when she served as a local precinct delegate.
During the 2004 presidential campaign, she raised $150,000 for George Bush’s campaign. In the 2016 primaries, she originally supported Jeb Bush, and then Marco Rubio. She had called Donald Trump an “interloper” at one point. Nevertheless, she helped turn out the vote in Michigan.
She and her family operate the DeVos Foundation, which donates large sums of money to schools, health research, the arts, free market studies, and helping organizations such as ArtPrize, funded by her and her husband.
Betsy DeVos has been an outstanding proponent for school vouchers, letting people send their child to a private school, adjusting the cost to be paid for by the tax money that would have paid for public school. She has been a proponent of the idea of charter schools and their involvement in furthering the needs of inner-city children. It appears that those who attend the charter school program consistently score higher on standardized tests.
It is clear to see that Betsy DeVos is not a person who will sit on the sidelines and watch the world go by. She will not sit still and do nothing, when there is much to be done. She will not only help others do it, she is one who will roll up her sleeves and help do it, herself. The United State is fortunate in having Ms. DeVos on the President’s cabinet.
