As the year 2017 comes to a close, many education insiders are taking stock of what was great in education. Thankfully, there were many different events to choose from. You can check them out below!
For starters, the education industry finally started backing away from standardized tests. Research has shown that high stakes testing does little to show what a student actually knows. It also fails to measure important areas of a child’s education. Judging teachers by tests scores has also shown to be equally ineffective, and it needlessly punishes hardworking teachers working with at-risk students. All of this is why many education policy makers, including those backed by billionaire Bill Gates, will be ditching the practice.
In 2017, federal data showed that violence decreased in schools. Surveys also showed that students feel safer now in schools. Some believe these pleasing statistics are the results of increased focus on reducing bullying in schools.
The dropout rate for high school students also decreased for students across all ethnic groups in 2017. This data also helped explain why standardized test scores are such a poor indicator of school performance. Average test scores may not be as high as some activists backed by big businesses would like, but this is because more students are sticking around to take the tests and try their best. In other words, those lower scores reflected positive changes.
2017 was a great year for education. Hopefully, with excessive testing now in the dustbin of history, 2018 can be even better!
