Meet Michael Burwell: Once the CFO, COO, and Head of Global Transformation for PwC’s, U.S. Operations, Now Finds Himself In A New Role As CFO For Wilson Towers Watson

Michael Burwell, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the company, Willis Tower Watson PLC, has had an impressive career in industries that focus on insurance, reinsurance and global advisory, and accounting practices. Indeed, before Burwell became CFO at Willis Tower Watson, he held many impressive roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, a firm which has been deemed the largest professional service company in the world.


Michael Burwell has held many senior and executive roles while working for ricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the last 31 years. Some of the important roles that Burwell has had at PwC included the following: Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Head of the Transaction Services, and the Head of Global Transportation for US Operations.


PwC is headquartered in London, England and exists as a group of firms located in 158 countries as well as 740 plus locations, globally. PwC is considered one of the most prestigious accounting firms in the world and is also on the top five list for largest privately owned firms in the United States, as of 2016.


In regard to Willis Tower Watson PLC, Michael Burwell was hired to replace Roger Millay in October, 2017. Millay retired from Willis Tower Watson, and Willis Tower Watson chose Burwell. The addition of Burwell to Willis Tower Watson was to help bring leadership, and also to provide a key element to the company’s evolution, as noted by Burwell’s boss and CEO, John Haley.


Burwell’s addition to Willis Tower Watson as CFO, will also bring key business knowledge and expertise in areas of leadership, management, as well as a results-oriented mindset. Mike Burwell earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Michigan State University (MSU) in 1986. He is also a certified public accountant (CPA), which helps bring an extra dynamic of specialization to complement his other skill sets. Burnell received a Distinguished Alumni Award from MSU and announced a large money contribution on behalf of PwC’s US Operations sector, to MSU in 2010. This pledge by Burnell and PwC involved donating $500,000 over a five-year span to the Accounting and Information Systems department in the Eli Broad College of Business.
