The state of New York started to enact a policy this January that allows parents to have the proper amount of maternity leave after welcoming a newborn into the world. Unfortunately, this law does not exactly include every profession across the board. One of those professions being public school teachers. Statistics have shown that when it comes to maternity leave in areas such as Boston, New York, Denver, and Seattle, unpaid leave is really the only type of leave you get. The only way new parents find themselves being able to utilize paid leave is if they have accumulated the appropriate amount of sick days.
The inequality surrounding maternity leave can be seen greatly when looking at the case of Meredith Formica. Formica gave birth to a son that had congenital cardiovascular disease. Due to her needing to take time off of work to care for him, she ended up losing approximately $20,000 in wages. Many career paths have protections in place to ensure that these wage losses do not happen to their employees, and the public education system should be expected to follow suite.
The United States is still one of the only developed countries that does not have an effective maternity leave policy in place. Public school teachers are starting to speak up about the lacking policies in order to promote a healthier and happier work environment. Bringing a child into the world can be overwhelming on its own, and one should not have to worry about not being able to take the time off that they need.
