Clay Siegall, A Medical Researcher and Business Leader

Clay Siegall is the co-founder of Seattle Genetics. This is a medical research company based in Seattle. He is the CEO of the company and the chair of the board. The company is currently the industry leader in antibody-drug conjugates development. They secured an approval from the FDA for the first drug of this type in 2011. The drug (ADCETRIS) is available globally and is approved in more than 60 countries.

Siegall has helped Seattle Genetics to secure partnerships with other top medical companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Genentech, and AbVie. These collaborations have turned out to be lucrative and have generated millions of dollars for the companies. Siegall is also responsible for raising funds for the firm. The company secured a billion dollars in financing during their IPO in 2001. The capital that was raised has allowed the company to conduct more experiments and research without the hindrance of finances. The company has tripled its stock price over the last few years under the leadership of Siegall. Siegall has shown business acumen in running a company.

Siegall attended the University of Maryland where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. He later received a Ph.D. in Genetics from the George Washington University. He was first employed at Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute as a senior research investigator after school. He was promoted to principal scientist at the institute a few years later. Siegall left the institute to join the National Cancer Institute as a Staff and Biotechnology Fellow. He decided to start Seattle Genetics after working here. He is a member of the board of directors of Alder BioPharmaceuticals, Washington Roundtable, and Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical.

Siegall’s mission since he started his career in the medical field has been to improve the lives of cancer patients. His research is focused on developing more solutions to cancer patients and help in their treatment. He holds more than a dozen patents. He has written numerous medical publications. Siegall has been recognized with a couple of awards throughout his career. The awards include the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year in 2012 and the University of Maryland Alumnus of the year in 2013.
